THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MOTHERS’ KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTION (ARI) AND THE INCIDENCE OF ARI ON UNDER-FIVE YEARS CHILDREN AT THE REGION OF BERGAS HEALTH CENTER WORKING AREA. Acute Respiratory Infection is one of the causes of mortality and morbidity in children, especially who aged under-five years. Causative factor of the ISPA is nutritiobal status, immunization, enviromental, brastfeeding, low birth weight and mother knowledge. The assume of mother if ISPA in children is a common disease that often arise and are not dangerous and can be disappear by itself, ISPA if not treated immediately can lead to death. By Strathmore University in 2012 there were as many as 17.311 people ARI patients. To overcome this disease is not enough by mastering the treatment and handling technology but requires a considerable knowledge about the prevention of acute respiratory infections among family members. The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between mothers’ knowledge about acute respiratory infection (ARI) and the incidence of ARI in under-five years children at Bergas Health Center Working Area.
This study used analytical correlation design with cross-sectional approach and data collected by using both of primary data (questionnaires) and secondary data (medical records). The population in this study was all mothers with children aged 1-5 years who visited Bergas health center in July 2013. The samples were taken by using accidental sampling technique as many as 78 respondents. Data analysis used Chi-Square test.
The results of this study indicate that most of respondents have sufficient knowledge about ARI as many as 31 respondents (39.7%) and the majority of respondents infected by ARI as many as 53 respondents (67.9%). The result of statistical tests using Chi-Square test obtained p-value of (0.007) <(0.05). It can be concluded that there is no significant correlation between level of knowledge about acute respiratory infection and the incidence of ARI in under-five years children at the region of Bergas Health Center Working Area.
This study is expected as can improve mother’s knowledege of the early signs of the disease that often affects infants and more attention to the health of their babies.
